Only do what gives you AND someone else in your life joy this season.
I think many times we are either acting selfishly or are giving too much. Neither of these is going to help you get into the holiday mood. So as you are shopping, making travel plans, coming up with family activities, and meal prepping in the following weeks, think about if it is going to make you and at least one other person in your life happy. Using this mental prompt should help you cut out the activities and gifts that are not necessary for having a joyful time with your family and friends this season (which I think should be the point).
For example, in regards to holiday plans and travel, if you are considering flying somewhere tropical for Christmas. Consider who will enjoy it and who will not. Is it what you want to do? Would the rest of your family rather stay home and watch the Grinch in their PJ's? Or on the flip side, does your family want to do travel at the expense of your budget and therefore mental peace? If it is going to be super stressful for you, talk about the issues with your family and come up with a compromise: either a cheaper trip, or a staycation that features some of the things this trip would offer.
And how this applies to gifting is that you want to make sure each gift is not just what you want to get someone or just what they asked for, but that you will both feel good about it. For example, are you just getting it for them because YOU would like to receive that item? Ask yourself, do THEY actually want it? Or are you getting your honey that expensive thing (car, pet, jewelry, tool, toy, etc.) to prove you love them? Or are you getting it for them because it would make them truly happy to have and use? Also, can you afford it? Do you feel good about gifting this item? If not, neither them or you will be happy in the long run.
Make sure everyone's opinion, including your own, is taken into account this season.
