Where to Declutter Third: Your Closet

Updated: Oct 17, 2023

This is my third blog in this series on what order you should declutter your home in. We've looked at why you should start in the kitchen and then declutter the bathroom next.

Now let's look at why your clothes should be step number three.

REMINDER: The biggest two hurtles of decluttering are getting started and then making enough progress, fast enough that you can actually see some positive change and therefore, keep up the momentum.

With these two issues in mind, let's talk about why you should make stop number three in your closet.

Most importantly, just having a specific room that's where you start after finishing the bathroom, will make continuing to declutter so much easier. Whether you've got mountains of clutter everywhere, some mild disorganization, just moved to a new house, or want to do some deep cleaning, try to get into the habit of always starting in the kitchen, then moving to the bathrooms, then conquering your clothing. That way you don't have to think about where to go next. Simple. Easy. Done.

Okay, but why is your clothing next?

1. Energy is vital to you, your relationships, and your continued decluttering. If you can't get dressed in the morning with ease, I'm sure you're familiar with the daily frustration and waste of time. Making this part of your morning routine easier (as well as your bathroom routine) will significantly improve your energy levels. So save your energy by decluttering your closet so you can be better equipped to face the day, spend time with your loved ones, and continue your declutter journey.

As you may have noticed, this reason was also listed for the kitchen and the bathroom. These spaces are centers of important daily routines which can seriously drain our energy if they are cluttered. Now let's look at some unique reasons why your closet should be early in the declutter process...

2. It's time to declutter something that is only yours. The kitchen and bathrooms can have items in them that belong to multiple people. In this step, it's time to declutter only YOUR clothes. Collect your shoes, coats, tops, bottoms, socks, underwear, and accessories. And fully sort, purge, and organize. Doing this will show you that although other people in your house may have a lot of clutter, SO DO YOU. We can't change other people but we can be an example. Who knows, doing this may convince your spouse, roommate, or child to want to declutter their closet too.

3. Decluttering your clothes will make you feel better. Through this process you will hopefully catch up on laundry, get rid of clothes that don't fit or that aren't your style, and solve the problems that cause you to throw up your hands saying, "I have nothing to wear!" Once your closet is simplified and organized, you'll feel like you can do anything.

4. Clothing is a fairly simple, contained category that is easier to declutter than other categories. You want to make sure you gain enough momentum early in the declutter process to keep going. Conquering your clothes can defiantly give that boost you need to push you forward.

Plus once you're done, seeing the beautifully transformed space all at once is fairly easy. It's a visual win!

Once you see how simple, beautiful, and functional your closet has become, you'll have the motivation to conquer on the next space you choose.

Although starting with the kitchen, next decluttering the bathrooms, and then third conquering your closet may be a great rule of thumb, it may not be the best place for you to start depending on your circumstances. For example, if your bedroom is so cluttered you don't have a place to sort your clothes, you might want to swap the order and do your bedroom first, then your closet. Basically, don't take this advice as fact if you're gut is telling you another space is more important right now. If you don't know where to start though, beginning in the kitchen, then moving to the bathrooms, then doing your closet, is better than starting nowhere.
