One of the struggles people have with decluttering, is holding on to things because they think they need them. But the truth is, you don't need very much at all. I recommend trying to live without for a short period of time and see how you do with just the basics.
One idea you can try, is going backpacking or on a short trip and packing as light as you can. When you get back home, you will be able to look at everything you just survived without with fresh eyes.
Another idea, is you can pack up the majority of one category of stuff and put it in a shed or the garage, and see what you miss. For example, you could pack all your makeup except for the very minimum you use everyday into a box and then bring it back after a month. Did you miss anything in there? If so, put those missed items back into your collection. If not, get rid of it. You can also try this with office supplies, clothes, dishes and kitchen utensils, or any other category in your house that you are struggling to whittle down but know you have more than you need.
If you try this out, let me know in a comment what you did! How did it change your perspective or help you get rid of the excess?
