Top 5 Tips to Declutter Fall Decor

Updated: Apr 30

Declutter your decor to create more space (and sanity!) for the coming year.

For more space and sanity later, take a few extra minutes to declutter as you put out or pack away your fall, Halloween, and Thanksgiving decor this season. Doing this creates more space in that you'll have less boxes, bags, and bins filling up the garage or storage closet. This declutter process gives you more sanity because decorating next year will be a breeze if you only have to dig through and put out those decor items you truly love and have space for.

So, with the motivation of more space and sanity, now is the time to declutter your decor with these 10 tips:

Tip 1 - Go natural.

Use more natural and edible items to keep your stored decor to a minimum.

Plan to decorate with real pumpkins and winter squash, seasonal fruit like apples and pears, fresh flowers and greenery, or dry plants and leaves. Using natural items like these will not only make your home look more beautiful than using cheap plastic decor, but it will also help keep your storage bins to a minimum.

Plus, you can make finding seasonal produce and plant life a tradition that is memorable, fun, and delicious.

TIME TO DECLUTTER: So, have any worn out fake garlands, flowers, or pumpkins? Time to throw them away or donate them (if they're not really ugly) to make room for the real thing!

Tip 2 - Your fall decor doesn't have to ONLY be fall decor.

Use things you already have around your house to help you decorate for fall. It's not clutter if it also serves a purpose! Look for orange, yellow, red, brown, and dark green items you own that you can put center stage.

Here are a few ideas:

  • throw blankets & pillows

  • books (make a stack of fall themed or colored ones as a center piece)

  • candles

  • cutting boards (use as tray/base for other decor)

  • mugs

  • glasses/vases

  • kick knacks

  • wood scraps

  • scarves (drape over a chair or hang on the wall)

TIME TO DECLUTTER: So, after finding some items you could use for fall decor that aren't actually fall decor, what are some decor items that you could let go of to make your fall decor bin a little lighter?

Tip 3 - If you didn't use it this year, let it go.

If you didn't make putting it up this year a priority, will you realistically use it next year? The answer is probably not. So give yourself permission to let it go. No matter how much you spent on it or who gave it to you, if you don't love it or have room for it in your space, there is no reason to keep it. Decorating for the seasons should be fun after all, not stressful. So make it easy on yourself.

TIME TO DECLUTTER: So, what is left in the bin that you didn't put up? LET IT GO!

Tip 4 - Don't overdecorate.

Decorate with only what you have truly have space for, and let the rest go.

You may have put out a particular item this year, but that doesn't mean it has to go up next year. Did you feel you had too much decor out? Have 5 decor items in the center of the dining room table? Would it look more elegant and clutter free with just 3 (the ideal number for interior design)?

Decorate your space with the amount of items that make it look BETTER, not worse. If you have so much decor out that you can't focus your eyes anywhere or relax because there are SO many pumpkins... it's probably time to let some more decorations go.

TIME TO DECLUTTER: Decorate your home with what looks good and fills the important spaces (empty shelves, center pieces, front door, etc), then donate the rest so you don't over decorate.

Tip 5 - Contain it.

Your fall decor should not be something that stresses you out the rest of the year.

So, if you have more bins of decor than you have the space (and/or sanity) to store, than you need to contain it. Get one or two good quality large bins to store all your fall decor in and then limit your decor to just that.

You may have to declutter some decor pieces that you genuinely love. But remember that if you don't have the space to store them, your space and sanity the rest of the year is more important than that one cute scarecrow that you put out once a year.

Your peace is more important than having cute stuff.

TIME TO DECLUTTER: Get your container (or containers) that you've decided you have the space to store and then fill them with your favorite fall decor items first until the bin or bins are full. The rest has got to go! YOU deserve it.

Remember that cute decor is NOT more important than your time, energy, or peace.

If you are struggling to declutter your decor down to amount that feels good to you and fits in your space. Go through your decor items again one by one and ask yourself if it is worth your life, your sanity, or your emotional energy. The answer each time should be a resounding, "NO!" So then look at which items bring you the MOST joy, and use step 5 to just keep your absolute favorites.

You got this.

I believe in you.
