In my last blog post, I talked about the Marie Kondo's primary sorting question which is "Does it spark joy?" I discussed ways in which to better utilize this question. So if you didn't read that post, go check it out!
Now, I want to talk about the question I find most helpful while sorting and decluttering which is "Do I want to bring this into my future?" I like it because rather than simply looking at your emotions, it brings up practicality too.
Here are some questions to help you dive deeper into the meaning of this question:
- Do I want this item?
- Will I use this in the future?
- Will this help me become the person I want to be?
- Will this hinder me from becoming the person I want to be?
- Does this item add enough value to my life to be worth thinking about, cleaning, organizing, & storing after today?
- Does this item give me enough value to be worth asking these questions about it again in a year or two?
Let me know what you think of this question in the comments. Do you prefer it to "Does this spark joy?" or other sorting questions you've heard? What's your favorite question to ask when sorting?
